ALOHA part II

On Feb 18 we flew from Kahului (Maui) north to O’ahu – the main island of Hawai’i with its metropolis Honolulu, the world famous “Waikiki Beach” and the pro-surf spot “North Shore”. Tropical 28°C degree and pure sunshine were welcoming us in Honolulu. “TheBus” (public bus) brought us to Kailua where David (our couchsurf host) lives – not even 5 minutes away from the beautiful Kailua Beach – a perfect white-sand beach with turquoise water and perfect wind conditions for kitesurfing.

David introduced us to the Hawaiian cuisine, served a delicious fish that was cooked in black sand, a typical rice dish (wrapped in palm leaves from his garden called “laulau”) and spicy salmon bits! A delicious experience! And he has initiated a similiar project named GoodPeopleGoodThings where he talks about great people / inventions and the story behind. The next day discovered the underwater world at “Hanauma Bay” together and spent the evening at the beach with a nice BBQ and a glass of wine.

ALOHA!

Finally, the day had arrived on which we got to see the islands of our dreams: HAWAI’I! We picked up our rented car and went to the nearby Wind-/ Kitesurf beach Kanaha where the surfers were jumping around at six wind forces (Beaufort).

Hills, fancy Victorian houses, water, more hills – this must be San Francisco! We spent 13 days in this amazing city. The stiff breeze at the waterfront, the famous „Fisherman’s Wharf“ and Pier 39 reminded us of Hamburg. We checked out the buzzing downtown with all its shops (that you’ll find in every large city) as well as the scene-district Heights with its bars and boutiques.

From the airport LAX we took the train to reach our “Couchsurfing-accommodation”. Being on an urban train with all the smelly bums & business people… I guess we are in a metropolis. “Oh, we have to get off here! Wahhh, I am standing on star – I freak out, we are in Hollywood – right at the “walk of Fame”!”
